The 2023 season of the New York Mets has nothing been but a roller coaster ride so far. The team started off strong but lost the plot in the middle and started to struggle with consistency. They soon went on to lose six consecutive series, before finally winning one.

On Thursday night, the Mets defeated the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays to clinch their first series win. The next day they had another game filled with highs and lows as they edged out a 10-9 thriller against the Cleveland Guardians thanks to a former Guardian in Francisco Lindor.

The shortstop has faced a lot of criticism ever since he made his way to New York. Also known as “Mr. Smile”, Lindor came with heavy expectations on his shoulders. Many had hoped for a much better impact for him. On Friday night, Lindor came back to haunt his former side as he scored the walk-off single in the tenth to help his current side grab the victory.

Calling this a perfect movie or storybook ending would not be wrong. Before his big-money move to the Mets, the 29-year-old spent six seasons at the Guardians. He was an integral part of the 2016 squad which came up just short in the World Series. In his time with the Guardians (then Indians), he achieved four All-Star and two golden gloves awards.

Lindor got this chance after the Guardians blew up a 5-0 lead. The Mets cashed in three runs and looked to carry on with the momentum only for their opponents to score again to take a 7-3 lead. Once again, NY Mets needed a hero, and guess who stepped up? Yeah, Pete Alonso. The shining knight of the Mets slammed a grand slam to level it up at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

In a topsy-turvy game, the Guardians once again took the lead as they made it 9-7. The Mets determined to turn their season around, rallied back, and scored three runs in the bottom of the tenth to walk it off. As a result of this, the Mets’ win percentage is back to .500 with a 23-23 record.

The New York Mets have faced a lot of criticism recently over their performances. In a recent interview, former MLB player and a teammate of Lindor at the Guardians, Jason Kipnis took a subtle dig at the leadership roles of the Mets. Speaking about it, Kipnis mentioned that the Mets have a lot of veteran players but nobody has the leadership skills to help the team out.

When asked about his thoughts on this, Lindor informed me that he has not spoken with Kipnis and claimed he has nothing to comment on. “I haven’t talked to him. That’s how he feels, it is what it is. I don’t really have much to say,” Lindor told a reporter after his side’s win over the Guardians.

Whether the words of Kipnis turned out as a motivation for Lindor and co remains to be seen. However, in the game against the Guardians, they looked like a proper version of themselves, a team who is willing to fight to earn the victory. They would be hoping to grab another win on Saturday to make it two consecutive series win.
