The New York Mets are having one of their worst seasons ever. It seems after each passing team, the team just gets worse and worse. They have lost a staggering 16 games of the last 21 they have played. On Sunday night, they were in control of the game against the Phillies. What followed next is something that has become a part of this season.
The Mets imploded. Going into the eighth inning, the visitors had a 6-3 lead. Losing in such a situation is not a crime or something bad. It can happen. Sports has seen this type of comeback many times. However, the way it happened truly defined their season. The NY Mets gave up four runs through one legal hit (it was not a grand slam).
An infield error followed by two hits by pitchers and walk allowed the Phillies to score four runs. Relief pitchers Josh Walker and Jeff Brigham took center stage in the loss. The Mets had the option to call on the experience of David Robertson before, but manager Buck Showalter refused to do so which cost them dearly.
During the broadcast of the game, Mets announcer Gary Cohen let out his true feelings. He labeled the Mets’ 42nd loss of the season as the most “horrific” one and slammed Showalter. “Buck Showalter tried to stay away from his best relievers and the Mets paid the price,” Cohen said during the live telecast. The Mets manager later claimed that the team was without some of their big names in the bullpen.
Pressure mounts even further on Buck Showalter after Mets loss to Brewers
There is a common saying that states “When it rains, it pours” and it seems Buck Showalter is heavily being poured. A defeat of such a magnitude is always difficult to overcome. However, the Mets had to try and forget what happened on Sunday and focus on the next assignment. What happened on Monday? They lost again.
The NY Mets’ 43rd loss of the season came in a close 2-1 defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers. Once again they took the lead and once again their bullpen failed them. Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander threw five scoreless innings. Drew Smith who returned from a failed substance check suspension, picked up the loss as he gave up two runs. The offense of the Mets was nowhere to be found as they managed just three hits.
“I don’t think anyone saw this coming,” Verlander said after the game. This slump has put manager Buck Showalter under tremendous pressure. Calls for his sacking have risen on social media following this defeat.
The question now on everyone’s minds is, how do they turn this season around? The front office and the backroom staff have a lot to discuss in connection to this matter. As of now, the Mets are eight games behind the .500 win percentage, despite having the highest payroll in MLB.
