Watch: Gary Sanchez practically decapitated by swinging on-deck batter, head nearly got cracked open

Gary Sanchez avoided what could have been a career/life ending injury when he unconsciously winded up close to a practice swing of teammate Gilberto Celestino, it was a full swing in the on-deck circle. He came mere centimeters from clocking Sanchez square in the face.

The incident occurred when Chicago brought in Kendall Graveman to face Sanchez with two outs in the eighth inning. Sánchez was heading back to the dugout to learn more about the reliever when he was almost hit.

“I had a few minutes to go and ask a couple questions about that pitcher,” Sanchez said through an interpreter. “I saw his bat was on his shoulder just standing there in the on-deck circle and so I went back to the dugout and I didn’t notice he was swinging.”

Gary Sanchez lowered his head after the bat passed, and Celestino leaned back with an incredulous look on his face. “He almost hit me, but thank God, nothing happened,” Gary Sanchez added. “It’s just an accident. It’s fine.”

Gary Sanchez was the Silver Slugger awardee in 2017, while on March 13, 2022, Sánchez was traded, along with Gio Urshela, to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Ben Rortvedt.

The New York Yankees dealt Gary Sánchez to the Minnesota Twins this March; it seemed like a classic change-of-scenery opportunity that should have worked for both sides. Sanchez struggled during the 2020 season. In 49 games, he batted .147 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli had nothing but good things to say about catcher Gary Sanchez and third baseman Gio Urshela, who are making their return to Yankee Stadium for the first time since the Yankees traded them to Minnesota.
