The Seattle Mariners are going through a mixed period after flying high a few weeks ago. At one stage it seemed they would run away with the division, but some defeats in the past few games have brought them down to earth again. The team is now attracting attention for an unwanted reason due to the comments from their pitcher, George Kirby.

The southpaw was unhappy with his manager, Scott Servais. This was due to the fact that the duo had fallen out and were not on the same page on Friday night when they faced the Tampa Bay Rays. Kirby would later issue a statement, which further sparked controversy. He has now come out and admitted his mistake, claiming that he screwed up.

On Friday night, the Mariners suffered a 7-4 loss to the Rays. This defeat came at a crucial time, as the Houston Astros had just swept the Texas Rangers. This made things difficult in the AL West for them, who wanted to avoid another defeat. Kirby had thrown 90 pitches in his six innings. He was sent back to the mound, something he did not want.

Eventually, he ended up conceding the game-tying home run and was replaced on the mound. “I wish I wasn’t out there for the seventh to be honest. I was at 90 pitches and I didn’t think I needed to go out there anymore,” he said after the loss on Friday. This led to questions being raised regarding his character and sportsmanship. He has now realized his mistake and apologized for it.

The actions and words of George Kirby came as a shock to many MLB fans. A professional pitcher of his quality calling out names was something that did not go down well for him. He soon became the trending topic for his words, as many questioned his qualities as a player. The 25-year-old southpaw has now not only apologized for his statement but also admitted that he behaved uncharacteristically.

“Obviously I screwed up. That’s not me. Skip’s always got to pry that ball out of my hands. Just super uncharacteristic of me as a player and who I am on the mound. I love competing. Like I said, I just screwed up,” he was quoted by AP.

His manager has backed him and claimed that the pitcher will learn some valuable lessons from this development. Speaking about this performance, he is currently 10-9 this season with a 3.48 ERA in his 27 starts. He would now be hoping to forget this soon and help his team going forward as the Mariners fight for a spot in the latter stages.
