“A rough patch”: Gerrit Cole substantiates his mastery as he strikes out 8 against the Mariners

Gerrit Cole

Gerrit Cole was absolutely breath-taking for the New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon’s 4-3 defeat to the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. New York Yankees are closing in in their third consecutive series loss and second in a row to Seattle Mariners. Cole did look like the ace the Yankees need him to be, which was an encouraging sign. Gerrit Cole did allow six runs on three home runs in the first inning of his previous start.

Cole’s previous start that took place against Luis Castillo and the Mariners last week but Cole knew he had to make a statement with a dominant performance, which he did on Wednesday. The Yankees’ bullpen couldn’t protect Cortes’ lead and the bats couldn’t come through in the spots where they needed it the most.

Overall, Gerrit Cole tossed seven shutout innings in which he scattered four hits while walking none and striking out eight. Lou Trivino recorded a huge strikeout to escape a bases loaded jam in the top of the 12th. Jonathan Loáisiga proceeded to load the bases in the 13th inning, then permitted the walk-off, run-scoring hit to Luis Torrens.

“I just thought we were better,” Gerrit Cole said. “I thought Judge made a great play on a soft-serve line drive; Benintendi made a similar kind of play…so those were big plays. We were sharp in the infield; we were sharp all night. Just fell one short.”

“It’s just a well-pitched ballgame on both sides,” Cole added. “Both teams trying to scrap one across, and it just didn’t fall our way. I thought we threw the ball well and played excellent defense.”

Apart from Gerrit Cole, Aroldis Chapman allowed a hit in a scoreless eighth inning, then Clay Holmes faced the minimum in the ninth. Scott Effross recorded a strikeout in a shutout 10th inning of work, then Wandy Peralta shut it down in the 11th and then got the first out of the 12th.

Unfortunately, Cole couldn’t come away with a win, as Luis Castillo matched zeroes on the other side before the Yankees ran themselves out of three scoring chances in extra innings.
