According to team manager Aaron Boone, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will have an MRI on his right elbow. The news of Cole getting a medical test delivers a heavy blow to the team’s 2024 season plans. Boone reported that Cole was experiencing “discomfort” in the past few days.
The reigning CY Young Award winner has failed to bounce back in spring training as the team had hoped. Boone even said he “usually doesn’t have the recovery issues he’s having” and this may lead to lineup changes in the future. Cole has only pitched for one game, although he’s been participating in practices so far.
Aaron Boone admitted that although “there’s a level of discomfort”, Cole is not experiencing any pain. Following his debut against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 1, he is scheduled to make his second appearance for the Grapefruit League on Tuesday. Even prior to the latest MRI newsbreak, the pitcher threw 47 pitches in a highly tense matchup and reported that he did not feel any discomfort at that time.
It was pretty good. I had a good time out there. And, yeah, did pretty much everything we wanted to do.Gerrit Cole as per ESPN.
So far in his 11-year career, Cole has never been on the injured list for an arm injury. He’s one of the key players for the Yankees lineup and his absence from the field can easily disrupt the team’s World Series title dream. Although, it is in case the player is absent for a long-time, however, the team is already treading thin on the pitching lineup following multiple trades in the past.
Update:
As of 14 March, it is reported that the Yankees ace will be out for at least a month, and no timeline for his return is yet decided. It’ll most likely depend on his next advanced test reports, which Gerrit Cole will be undergoing in California. So far no tear in his right elbow ligament has been detected.
Fans react as Yankees lineup suffers blow from Gerrit Cole’s absence
Although the NY Yankees have their prospective candidates to take Gerrit Cole’s place in the lineup, it’ll hurt the team nonetheless. With multiple trades taking place in the past few seasons, the team can’t afford to lose a key player. Given the circumstances, if Cole is expected to be out for the long term, Will Warren, Clayton Beeter, and Luis Gil will be on standby.
Fans are devastated by the news and have spoken about how the season ended for the Yankees before it even began. They even talked about the team signing free agent Blake Snell to boost their 2024 season goals. One X user noted, “Ya it’s over,” while another said, “And just like that, Blake Snell became a Yankee.”
Unfortunately, as per reports, chairman Hal Steinbrenner has not been very enthusiastic about signing new players. One of the reasons is that the team is projected to exceed the $300 million payroll, making it harder for the team’s 2024 season. The fans are all hoping for a positive update from the Yankees regarding Cole, or for the team to sign up free agents prior 2024 season starts.
