After helping the Milwaukee Bucks win the NBA championship for the first time in 50 years, Giannis Antetokounmpo added the title of MLB owner to his résumé. The purchase of minority ownership in the baseball franchise by the Greek Freak was disclosed by the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. “We are honored to have Giannis join our team of Milwaukee Brewers investors,” principal owner Mark Attanasio said while announcing the news. “Giannis is a great athlete, a world champion, and a true local hero with international renown.”

The two-time MVP is the first new private stakeholder since Attanasio paid $223 million to buy the Brewers in 2005 to join the ownership group. The Brewers were rated by Sportico at $1.37 billion in April, ranking 27th among MLB teams. The team now holds an 8.5-game advantage in the National League Central race, which would result in a fourth consecutive postseason appearance. The investment made by Giannis Antetokounmpo was not disclosed in terms of money.

The most recent MVP to commit to his home team is Giannis Antetokounmpo. While Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes invested in the Royals last year, only weeks after agreeing to a $503 million contract, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers purchased a minor investment in the Bucks in 2018.

“This city has embraced me,” said Antetokounmpo at a Friday afternoon press conference. “I love giving them joy; I love winning championships, and I hope I can do it again so I can see more people happy at the same time in this city because sometimes the snow can make you a little grumpy.” Son of Nigerian immigrants, Giannis Antetokounmpo grew up in Athens and supported his family by selling sunglasses and watches on the street.

Despite not beginning to play basketball seriously until he was 13, the Bucks selected him in the third round of the 2013 NBA Draft. Disney is making a Blindside-style biopic about the five-time All-Star, who made $49 million in pay and endorsements last season and was ranked No. 17 among the highest-paid athletes in the world across all sports because his rags to riches tale were so compelling.

His five-year, $228 million contract with the Bucks, which will be the biggest in NBA history, will begin the following season. Nike, JBL, 2K Sports, T-Mobile, Aegean Airlines, Budweiser, and Ready Nutrition are just a few of the many brands he has endorsed.
