Hanser Alberto sets MLB record for most relief appearances by a non-pitcher in a single season

Friday night, after the Los Angeles Dodgers lost a lopsided game, manager Dave Roberts decided to have Hanser Alberto pitch the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres. An MLB record for the most relief appearances by a non-pitcher in a single season was set when Alberto took the mound for his seventh appearance. He continued it by participating in Saturday’s victory. Two-way players like Brooks Kieschnick and Shohei Ohtani are excluded from the stat.

“I think it just happened organically,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Hanser Alberto pitching. “I didn’t expect him to break position-player records pitching. I think a lot of it has to do with being a teammate. He never runs from it, he understands the value of taking an inning to take care of a guy in the bullpen.”

“I really appreciate him as a baseball player. He understands his role on the ballclub, and that’s part of the reason why fans adore him and players respect him.”

Hanser Alberto first pitched on May 17 while a member of the Dodgers. In 2019, he made his pitching debut for the Baltimore Orioles and also appeared in one game with the Kansas City Royals. Alberto pitched to a 12-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks while giving up just one run. Nine days later, the 29-year-old was back in action, this time at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks. In the Dodgers’ 14-1 victory, Alberto pitched a scoreless ninth inning despite allowing a single.

The Dodgers shut out the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 28 after he made his next start on July 28 and recorded the final three outs. Two weeks later, Alberto returned to the mound to face his former Kansas City Royals teammates. He finished the third of what would become four straight scoreless appearances despite giving up a single and a walk.

On August 23, the utility infielder contributed to that by holding the Milwaukee Brewers scoreless. After that, Alberto made two more appearances, but Hunter Renfroe’s two-run home run ended his scoreless streak. Alberto made his first appearance in a Dodgers defeat on Friday night.
