With every passing day, the race for playoffs in Major League Baseball (MLB) gets heated. While the Atlanta Braves have already booked their spot with their sixth straight divisional title, the other spots are still up for grabs. In this race, the divisional contest of AL West has been the tightest of them all with the trio of Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners all trading blows left and right. The Astros suffered a major blow following their loss to the Kansas City Royals.

A few days before, the defending champions were flying high with momentum. This came to a sudden halt as they lost two of the three games to Oakland Athletics. This 4-2 loss at the hands of the Royals could prove crucial going forward.

The Astros have struggled a bit this season. Injuries to key hitters Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez also played a huge part in this rough patch. However, they seemed to be back on the right track and playing the way they have done over the recent years gone by. This defeat at the hands of the Royals was similar to the one they suffered against the A’s.

A trio of home runs from Bobby Witt Jr., Nelson Velaquez, and Michael Hassey condemned them to this defeat. The Astros have now lost three games out of the four against the two worst sides this year statistically.

If there was a time when the Houston Astros would hope to avoid losing games and going on a poor run, then it’s now. The team cannot afford to endure a poor run of games if they are to make it into the postseason as division winners. They might still make the playoffs but would have to go to the wild card round where they could face any early elimination.

The fans are obviously furious with this performance from their team. It is not the defeat that is eating them up, it is the opposition they lost against. While not disrespecting the Kansas City Royals, they along with the Oakland Athletics have been the two worst teams this season. One angry user would refer to them and write “Making terrible teams look incredible.” Check out some other reactions along with that from Twitter (now called X).

This loss of the Astros has made things interesting once again in the AL West. The Rangers have enjoyed a good run and are half a game behind them in first place. Meanwhile, the Mariners are 2.5 games behind them. This has now become a contest where the team who blinks first, could lose the top spot and have to settle with the wildcard standings.
