As the dust starts to settle on the 2023 campaign, teams have already begun their planning for the 2024 season. Several marquee players are expected to leave their teams. One interesting name in this has been Juan Soto.
The San Diego Padres star has been linked with a move away from the team. Since joining the team midway through the 2022 season, Soto has struggled to replicate his previous heroics at the Washington Nationals. An MLB insider has now made a bold prediction regarding his future with the National West team in San Diego.
The Padres had a disappointing campaign this time around. After reaching the knockout phases in 2022 and eliminating their rivals, the LA Dodgers, the expectations were high for the team. The start quartet of him, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and the new signee of Xander Bogaerts were expected to help them achieve their goals.
However, things went completely wrong for them. All of them struggled to play with consistency, which directly affected the team. They finished with an 82-80 record, were third in the table, and missed out on the playoffs. With the team now looking to rebuild themselves, Soto could be traded away to a potential buyer.
Are Juan Soto’s days with San Diego Padres numbered?
In the middle of 2022, the San Diego Padres and their fanbase were celebrating the arrival of Juan Soto. The talented player left the Washington Nationals and joined the team on a lucrative offer. Since then, things have not worked out well for him. An MLB Insider has now claimed that there is a 100 percent chance that he will be traded in 2024.
Soto who will hit the unrestricted free agency in 2025, might just leave the team before that time period. Speaking on The Michael Key Show, ESPN’s Buster Olney said that he is destined to be traded before the season.
Absolutely, 100% he's going to be traded before the season.Buster Olney
The Padres, who have an estimated payroll of $255 million, would now like to bring that amount down while trading away one of the stars. Recently, it was reported that the team had taken a $50 million loan to cover some of this payroll. This could indicate signs of some financial troubles the team is facing while assembling a star-studded squad.
One team that has emerged as the early favorite to try and land him is the New York Yankees. The American League East side had a similar season to the Padres, where their stars failed to deliver consistent performances. A move to the Yankees could help out both teams.
