In a surprising turn of events on Wednesday, Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher J.C. Mejia received a huge 162-game ban. This comes as a result of him being tested positive for using Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs). This is also the second time he has now been suspended for violating the Major League Baseball (MLB) drugs policy.
The southpaw was given an 80-game suspension in 2022 for using the banned substance, Stanozolol. This time the length of the punishment has been increased as he has been found using the same banned substance again. After returning from his first suspension, he struggled heavily at the plate and did not pitch much.
As soon as the results came out, he was suspended from baseball activities. This suspension means that he is unlikely to pitch until late September next year. Currently, he is on the 60-day injured list with an inflammation in his right shoulder. He made nine appearances this season and had a 1-0 record with an ERA of 5.56 and picked up thirteen strikeouts in the process.
His suspension also comes at a time when the league is dealing with the shocking development of Alex Rodriguez. The former Yankees superstar has dealt a huge blow in his career through his usage of PEDs. In a recent report, he shockingly gave away the names of players involved in the PEDs scandal, raising further questions regarding MLB’s policy and action on this matter.
Milwaukee Brewers make statement regarding J.C. Mejia’s suspension
The MLB season keeps on getting hotter with each passing day. The race for the postseason keeps on seeing new twists and turns as teams battle it out for the final few places. One thing they all want to avoid at this moment is something that can distract them from their original goal. The Milwaukee Brewers are among one of those teams chasing the postseason and this suspension of J.C. Mejia was the last thing they wanted.
A player getting suspended for breaking league policy is nothing new. However, the case of every player is different. For Mejia, this is the second time he has been found breaking the rules for the same offense. His second suspension raises questions regarding the MLB’s rules and regulations and whether they are actually followed or not. The Brewers in their statement said they support the decision of the body.
“The Milwaukee Brewers fully support MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and share in the goal of eliminating performance-enhancing substances from the game,” the team’s president of baseball operations, Matt Arnold said.
At the moment the Brewers are top of the National League Central with an 86-66 record, seven games ahead of the Chicago Cubs. They would be hoping this suspension of Mejia does not have any effect on the team’s current morale and derail their train at the end. The ways they have played in recent weeks, they could still make the playoff despite a slight hiccup but they won’t want that to happen.
