Jacob deGrom will not be pitching against the New York Yankees in the Subway Series; the New York Mets right-hander was originally expected to start on Tuesday. 34-year-old Jacob deGrom has made 4 starts since returning from the injured list, last pitching on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves without warmup, throwing a season-high 95 pitches.

Jacob deGrom in the four starts to date has compiled a 2.31 ERA (172 ERA+) and a 37.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He had gone more than a calendar year before big-league appearances prior to returning to the Mets rotation on Aug. 2.

“The feedback we get from [Jacob deGrom], and everybody, on where he is, the torque and the things you do to create what he creates,” Manager Buck Showalter said before the game Monday against the Yankees.

“We’re trying to be careful,” he added. “We don’t think it’s a bad thing for Jake and for Bass. We’ve gone a long stretch here where these guys haven’t gotten much extra time.”

“If the weather cooperates, he’s scheduled to pitch for us tomorrow,” Buck Showalter said. “With Tai [Taijuan Walker], you don’t want him to get too far away from pitching and lose his arm strength, and some of the things that you might lose if you get too far away from it. That was the primary reason.”

Buck Showalter was also asked about the desirability in splitting up Max Scherzer and deGrom in the rotation. On the other hand, Taijuan Walker the 30 years old, has posted a 3.36 ERA (117 ERA+) and a 2.58 strikeout-to-walk ratio over the course of 21 starts this season.

“It’s a byproduct of it,” Showalter said. “Until we get Carlos [Carrasco] back and make sure that Tai is OK, it’s one of those things if you plan too much there is nothing given, that Max is going to pitch deeper into a game. But if you go by track record it probably makes sense to split those guys (Max and Jacob deGrom) up.”
