Houston Astros GM James Click’s DIVORCE from team brought new light on the said reason

Jim Crane and James Click

Houston Astros general manager James Click leaving the team after being offered a year’s contract has been a hot topic for a while. There’s no doubt this incident will call for attention, as the said team won the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies in six games recently.

There’s no GM in MLB who left a team this quickly after it has accomplished a big feat. the Post’s Jon Heyman stated earlier in the week, that Click’s 1-year deal was “uninspiring”. Further clarity on the situation has been brought to light recently.

Things pointed out that owner Jim Crane didn’t quite like James Click’s management style, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who further investigated the matter. Click became the first general manager in 1947 and has been the to leave an MLB franchise this soon after its title win.

New front office voices have been brought by Crane. The new joiners were Jeff Bagwell and Reggie Jackson. Though the former played his entire 15-year career with the Astros, the latter is not affiliated with the team.

It is also rumored that Crane nixed a deal with Cubs for catcher Wilson Contreras while having negotiated with relief pitcher Rafael Montero for $34.5 million for a 3-year deal to return to the team. One Astros employee told Passan, “Sometimes I wonder if [Crane] thinks he’s Jerry Jones”.

Unlike Click, Crane preferred the former GM Jeff Luhnow’s style more regarding managerial stuff. Luhnow was rather head-sure about his decisions, which one of Passan’s sources confirmed as, “institutional arrogance, which Jim actually thought was an admirable thing.”

The whole situation after all started with Crane offering Click a 1-year contract extension after the team’s accomplishment. The latter and even many of the baseball world labeled it as an “insult”. Considering Click’s achievement, it’s not too far off.  In addition, the team also fired assistant GM Scott Powers, who was brought in by Click in January.

On Tuesday, Click described the rift between Crane and him as, “We’re different”. “Jim is — well, look, let me clarify. There’s some things that we do very differently. There’s some things that we are very lined up on and that’s going to be true of any relationship between a boss and an employee.”

“I think he likes to act very quickly. In certain cases, I tend toward a more deliberate approach. He is very demanding, but he also gives you the resources to accomplish what he tasks you to do.”
