In a major development on Wednesday, Major League Baseball (MLB) slapped New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero with a suspension for the remainder of the season. The southpaw has been found to have violated the league policy on domestic violence. The 31-year-old has accepted this punishment after an investigation.
Through a statement released on Wednesday, the New York Yankees showed their support for the official probe. They are said to be “fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process.” Following the announcement, Cordero’s official social media accounts were found to be inactive.
As per official rules, the MLB does not disclose what is being investigated when players are suspended under this policy. As per Fox News, Cordero is suspended for 76 games for violating the domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. However it is unclear what led to this drastic development.
This 76-game ban is among the longest, the league has slapped on players. While Trevor Bauer was fined with a 324 games ban (later reduced to 194), his teammate Domingo German was suspended for 81 games. German was accused of domestic violence with his wife and served the ban between 2019 and 2020.
Jimmy Cordero career continues to go downhill following latest suspension
As of now, nothing can be said about what led to this suspension. An investigation will unearth the mystery around it. It is however likely that this saga will play a major role in Jimmy Cordero’s career. He has not had a great time in recent years. The Dominican pitcher has suffered various setbacks in his career.
He missed the whole of the 2021 season due to Tommy John surgery. Following this he joined the Yankees and played out the 2022 season with their minor league team. This season he had emerged as an experienced leader and was in the middle of a career resurgence. In the 31 games he took part in this year, he threw 32 and two-third innings along with an era of 3.86
The Yankees will now have to cope with his loss. A struggling season for them has seen even the big names have a hard time out. Not to mention they are without their inspirational leader Aaron Judge. While they continue to struggle offensively, their relievers have done a good job. Their era of 2.82 is reported to be the lowest in the MLB.
