Early in his baseball career, he was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2007 as a freshman. In the 2009 MLB Draft, Joe Kelly got selected in the third round by the St.Louis Cardinals and made his professional debut with the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short Season New York Penn-League, where he scored 30 strikeouts in 16 games. He became the Cardinals’ starting pitcher. And the end of the season with them, he recorded 113 strikeouts, pitched 132 innings, and walked 59 in 23 games. In 2012 he graduated to the major leagues and made his debut on June 10.

He became the winning pitcher of Game 4 of the World Series in 2018 after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in 5 games.
