In the world of professional sports, getting hit by a playing object is very common. Sometimes the fans and other non-playing members find themselves in this tricky situation. On Saturday during the rivalry game between the NY Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, announcer John Sterling got caught up in a mess. The 84-year-old was stuck by a high foul ball of the bat of Justin Turner.
The veteran announcer has been covering sports for more than five decades now. He would become the highlight of the game after getting hit by the ball. The incident took place in the ninth inning when the Red Sox were trailing their arch-nemesis 3-1. Turner, who tried to provide some offense for his side made it clear that the chances of getting hit by a foul ball are low but never zero.
With Turner facing a 3-2 count, the hitter decided to swing a bat at it, and the ball went up high and fouled. Perhaps no one expected the ball to reach the booth. Sterling himself was left stunned and said live on air that he did not think the ball would hit him. He later showed off his experience in continuing the call as the Yankees picked up a ground-out to level the series and win the game.
Justin Turner signs the foul ball and sends it to John Sterling
Over the course of the years, John Sterling has established himself as one of the most recognized voices in MLB coverage. He started calling games for the Yankees in 1989 and has been going on strong since. He would show off his grit and strength as he continued to deliver the call after getting stuck. Red Sox’ Justin Turner would later send him the foul ball, signed along with a message.
The former Dodgers man took note of the incident and said “To John, no matter where you sit at a ballgame, you’re never safe.” This is now the second time he has been hit by a foul ball in his booth – the first being in 2016 in a game against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees were able to level up the series with this win.
The rivalry series between the Yankees and Red Sox came to an end on Sunday as the visitors took the third game. The Yankees lost the first game after Rafael Devers carried on to assert his dominance over Gerrit Cole. They got the job done in the second game. However, the decisive game saw the Red Sox return to Boston with bragging rights.
Up next for the Yankees is another rivalry match-up. They take on the NY Mets in Citi-Field. The two teams from New York are struggling for consistent performances. This series could give them a great chance to sort out the things which are going wrong. Both sides will be without their star players Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso, as the duo sit on the injured list.
