Former World Series MVP John Wetteland’s sexual assault divulged in a mistrial

John Wetteland testified at his trial in Denton County. A Texas judge has declared a mistrial on Friday in the child sexual assault case against former MLB pitcher and World Series MVP. The jury is split 10-2 in John Wetteland’s aggravated sexual assault of a child case.
In John Wetteland’s defense, they requested the judge declare a mistrial but were denied. He is accused of sexually abusing a child, who is now in his 20s, beginning when the boy was 4. Wetteland could face damnation which be up to life in prison if convicted.
In front of the jury, John Wetteland denied accusations he showered with the relative, calling it “weird” and saying the boy shouldn’t see his “naked body.” Prosecutors alleged without the jury present that Wetteland exposed himself to another relative who was 14 at the time.
“I got about two, three sentences in … and I physically couldn’t read it,” John Wetteland said of the letter. He said he finally read the letter before the trial began.

John Wetteland was a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos and New York Yankees, with whom he was crowned the 1996 World Series MVP. Wetteland subsequently joined the Rangers in 1997.
Wetteland retired after the 2000 season but stuck around to coach for a few years before spending time on the Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners staffs. One of the prosecutors, Prosecutor Rachel Nichols said the accuser had “nothing to gain” by coming forward with abuse allegations.
“He’s not this evil kid,” Nichols said. “He didn’t want the world to know.” Denton County First Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck said in an email Sunday: “We will move forward, whether this means it is resolved through negotiations or trial again is up to him.”
Before joining the Rangers as a closer, John Wetteland spent two seasons with the New York Yankees and three each with the Expos and Dodgers. The All-Star closed out his career with a record of 48-45, 330 saves, 804 strike-outs and a 2.93 ERA from 1989-2000.
