“Nothing I can do to stop it”-Jonathan Heasley throws up on field amid game against Arizona Diamondbacks

Hunter Dozier and Jonathan Heasley
In the first game of the series against Arizona on Tuesday, Jonathan Heasley’s early departure due to an unsettled stomach allowed the bullpen to allow seven runs to score over 4 13 innings. In three innings of work, Josh Staumont and Luke Weaver combined to allow six runs and five walks, which caused the game to be lost.
Jonathan Heasley struggled early in the game, but he was able to overcome it and toss four scoreless innings. He had trouble swallowing his meal and puked twice in the fourth inning, but he was still able to participate in the game. With his 17th home run of the year and the Royals’ first baserunner of the game, Bobby Witt Jr. gave the team a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Jonathan Heasley puked once more in the fifth, forcing Mike Matheny to lift him. If you’d like, you may view the video here. Jonathan Heasley pitched around four hits, four walks, and two strikeouts in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
Off reliever Jose Cuas, the Diamondbacks leveled the game in the sixth inning. Geraldo Perdomo lined a pitch off Cuas’ leg for a run-scoring single with two outs after two singles. Arizona would go in front thanks to Staumont in the sixth. Christian Walker and Ketel Marte each hit singles with one out, and left fielder MJ Melendez’s error allowed both runners to score. After Daulton Varsho walked to put Arizona up 2-1, Jake McCarthy scored on a sacrifice fly to bring in another run.

Did the Royals lose their luck with Jonathan Heasley’s departure?

Given how unstable Staumount had appeared with a fastball sitting at 94-95 mph, Matheny’s decision to let Staumont continue into the next inning seemed risky. Alek Thomas received a double after he walked two batters to load the bases. With the help of former Diamondbacks pitcher Luke Weaver, all three runners would eventually cross the plate and make it 5-1 for Arizona.
In the ninth, the Royals mounted a comeback. In the ninth, Nicky Lopez tripled and came around to score on MJ Melendez’s sacrifice fly. Salvador Perez singled with an RBI against former Royals pitcher Ian Kennedy to draw the Royals within two runs after Bobby Witt Jr.’s triple.
With few other choices in the bullpen, Mike Matheny departed Weaver in the ninth inning as he proceeded to detonate. He intentionally walked the first two batters, and they both scored on singles by Josh Rojas and, appropriately, on doubles by Emmanuel Rivera to make the score 7-3. Together, the Royals pitchers walked nine batters and gave up 13 hits.
Only five hits were collected by Royals batters, who have now gone eight games without six or more hits. Tomorrow night, the Royals will play the Diamondbacks once more; Brady Singer will start against Zac Gallen at 7:10 CT. The Royals now have a record of 50-75.
