According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Altuve will now receive a $15 million signing bonus. Apart from this he will receive a salary of $30 million for the first three seasons and $10 million for the last two years of his contract. This will make Altuve the first $300 million second baseman in the history of MLB.

At the start of the season, he was one of the top four players of the Astros who was facing the free agency. This extension of him can now allow the two-time World Series winner to turn their attention towards Alex Bregman, who will become a free agent after the end of the 2024 season. It will be interesting to see how the team deals with this situation now.

Jose Altuve becomes ‘Astro for life’ following contract extension

Following the announcement of this deal, Astros owner Jim Crane expressed his satisfaction towards the deal and claimed it will be ‘big deal for the franchise‘ if he retires with them.

Altuve was here when I got here in 2011. We're the only two guys that have been here that long. Not only has he performed well, but to have him hopefully retire here is a big deal for the franchise, and I think it’s a big deal for him and a big deal for the fans, more importantly.

Last season, the three-time American League batting champion was reduced to just 90 appearances due to a fractured thumb and left oblique strain. This did not stop Altuve from making history though as became the third Astros player to achieve 2,000 hits.

Another milestone moment saw Altuve hit for the cycle against the Boston Red Sox. This made him the first Astros player since 2013 to accomplish this impressive feat. What further milestones will he achieve with the team now remains to be seen as Altuve enters a crucial phase of his career.
