“The clutchest player”- Twitter reacts as Jose Ramirez sets career high with 106 RBIs

Jose Ramirez’s contributions to Cleveland have mostly been forgotten as Aaron Judge of the Yankees has attracted a lot of attention as a result of his absurdly successful season in 2022 and for good reason. Jose Ramirez drove in two runs as the Guardians defeated the Mariners 4-3 on Saturday at T-Mobile Park, breaking his previous record for RBIs in a single season. The victory not only maintained Cleveland’s three-game lead over the Twins, who had earlier in the evening won in a walk-off fashion, but it also served as a reminder of Ramirez’s outstanding season.

“That’s why the day they signed him, everybody was so happy,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “Because he is reliable and he’s what you’re looking for in your best player. He checks all the boxes.” With more than five weeks left in the regular season, Jose Ramirez set a career record with 106 RBIs. He has 43 RBIs in his last 43 games, which puts him only one behind Judge (109) in the Majors.

Jose Ramirez has done what couldn’t have been done in Cleveland for two decades

In Cleveland, what Jose Ramirez is doing hasn’t been seen in almost 20 years. Travis Hafner had at least 106 RBIs in a player’s first 125 games for a franchise in a season previous time it happened in 2006. If Ramirez’s importance to this lineup wasn’t already clear, consider that the team has a record of 39-15 when he scores at least one run compared to a record of 28-43 when he does not.

Ramirez recorded his 16th game with two extra-base hits with his home run in the fourth inning and his American League-leading 38th double in the eighth. That is two more than any other Major League batter has this year (Judge and Austin Riley each have 14). In 125 games for Cleveland, he is not the first to do this, but he joins some very select company.

Seven previous hitters with at least 16 games and multiple extra-base hits have occurred in the history of the franchise. Earl Averill (17 in ’34), Manny Ramirez (16 in ’98), Lou Boudreau (16 in ’40), and Hal Trosky (16 in ’36) all accomplished it once each. Albert Belle accomplished it three times (19 in 1995, 17 in ’94, and 17 in ’96). Ramirez will now turn 16 in 2022, which will be added to that list.  Additionally, he made history on Saturday night by collecting the 504th extra-base hit of his career. By surpassing former teammate Carlos Santana’s 503 extra-base hits, he now has sole possession of the eighth place in club history.
