Josh Hader is headed to San Diego Padres! The reigning National League Reliever of the year and All-Star closer, on Monday in exchange for recently benched closer Taylor Rogers and three other players will play his next game in a Padres jersey. This is a blockbuster deal between National League playoff contenders.

Both San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers are in contention for this years National League race. Josh Hader has 29 saves while Rogers has 28, the San Diego Padres recently removed Taylor Rogers from the closer role after he blew consecutive opportunities in a series at Detroit.

“The players we are receiving in this trade help ensure that the future of the Milwaukee Brewers remains bright while not compromising our desire and expectation to win today,” Brewers President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said in a statement.

He added, “This mix of present major league talent and high-level prospects furthers our aim to get as many bites of the apple as possible and, ultimately, to bring a World Series to Milwaukee.”

“Obviously, I wasn’t expecting it fully, but I knew it was a greater chance than years previous,” Josh Hader said of the trade. “It sucks to leave Milwaukee and everyone here and all the relationships I’ve built over the years. I started my career off here, and the opportunities that go with that.”

Josh Hader added, “But I always look at [the things] I can control and being able to have a new chapter in my journey. It’s something I’m looking forward to, getting over to San Diego to join their team.”
