“Never left my zone”: Julio Rodrigues shines as Seattle Mariners edge past Houston Astros
Julio Rodrigues
The 21-year-old Julio Rodrigues on Monday delivered a peach of a shot into the right field seats, skipping his way to the first base and holding to his bat midway to the lines. He proved to be Seattle Mariners’ punctuation mark in the 7-4 victory.
Julio Rodrigues was sent to the big stage in the match between Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros in which he kept his calm only to bring the match win for his team.
The 21-year-old Dominican Republic player, Julio Rodrigues was freshly coming out of the limelight of being American League’s Rookie of the month for May. Mariners took the win in a venue where they have been jinxed since 2019.
Julio Rodrigues likes it when his blood is running hot
“I feel like I never left my zone,” Rodriguez said, “I knew that we had a whole situation going on, but I was like, ‘I’ve got to be ready to hit.’ At the end of the day, I don’t know about that whole situation, but I just needed to stay locked in and be able to deliver for the team.”
Rodrigues was also seen, in all reasonableness, restricting his fellow Dominican Republic native and Houston reliever Héctor Neris when the brawl took an unpleasant turn.
“At the end of the day, he’s on the other team,” Rodríguez said. “I play for the Mariners, and we’ve got to compete. … I definitely was fired up. I never really talk or yell during my homers, but given the situation, I felt like I needed to and I kind of let all my emotions go out.”

The Houston Astros’ stadium Minute Maid Park has not been a stadium filled with Seattle Mariners’ good performances as they held a record of 4-26 before this victory. Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais said in the post-match interview, “This place hasn’t been kind to us, and we need to turn it,” said Servais, who was ejected for arguing during the benches-clearing incident. “Sometimes, a little emotion and playing on edge help, and our guys responded there late in the game.”
Julio Rodrigues was the central character in this cumulative effort that helped Seattle Mariners overcome the spooky-ness they felt in the Minute Maid stadium after a shaky start. His homers made it seem like it was going to take every last pitch to accomplish the result.
