2022 MLB Rookie of the Year names finally have been revealed. Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves outfielders Julio Rodriguez and Michael Harris II were named as Top Rookie on Monday night. Mariners Rodriguez snatched the Award for the American League, with his phenomenal performance, starting from his Opening Day roster call.
The All-Star winner was a fan favorite to win this year. Especially after his feat in the Home Run Derby, where he led the Mariners to end a 21-year playoff drought. He also won a Silver Slugger Award for his astounding performance. During his first season, Rodriguez made a score of .284/.345/.509 with 25 doubles, 3-triples, 28 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases.
With Rodriguez’s Rookie of the Year Award, he quickly caught hold of Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman, and Cleveland outfielder Steven Kwan. the Baseball Writer’s Association of America gave him a vote of 29 out of 30. He was the 3rd rookie to ever have 25 plus home runs and 25 plus stolen bases.
Michael Harris II was named 2022 MLB Rookie of the Year along with Julio Rodriguez
Braves outfielder Michael Harris II on the other hand, got crowned as the National League winner of 2022. He earned 22 out of 30 first-place votes. He had a slimmer margin considering how close his teammate Spencer Strider came in. Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals got seated in third place.
Arizona outfielder Jake McCarthy and Alexis Diaz of Cincinnati finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Drafted by the Braves in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft, he made his debut in the MLB spotlight in 2022. By the end of May, he had a record of hitting .297/.339/.514 with 27 doubles, 3-triples, 19 homers, 64 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases in 114 games.
The Mariners inked Rodriguez to a $209.3 million extension, thus tying him to the team for 12 years. While Harris signed an 8-year $72 million deal with his respective team. As of now, the Braves won 5 National League titles, which is a celebratory feat in itself.
According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Harris, and Strider are the 8th set of teammates to finish 1st and 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting. Then again, Dominican baseballer J-Rod was compared to Ken Griffey Jr. for his accomplishments. In July, Ken told The Athletic’s Sam Blum, “Quit comparing him to me”. “Let that man create his own path.”
