In an eventful week for the New York Mets, On Sunday Justin Verlander wrote his name in another historic MLB feat. The 40-year-old veteran 5.1 innings against the Washington Nationals in his side’s 5-2 win. This victory marked his 250th career win. He is now the 49th pitcher to reach this milestone. This margin of wins is the most by an active pitcher right now.
This huge moment came after speculations regarding his future surfaced. The Mets have already traded away another Cy Young Award winner in Max Scherzer. This could also have been his final game for the Mets as the deadline day approaches. The two veterans had endured a tough period this season and the team could lose both of them in the space of a few days.
Verlander improved his record to 6-5 this season. The Mets who themself are struggling as a team, have fallen way back behind their NL East rivals, Atlanta Braves. The veteran pitcher admitted that the season has been tough for them but vowed to try and win a championship here.
“I am committed to trying to win a championship here,” Verlander claimed. He though added that if the organization thinks the decision is not going on the right track, he could be open to a move. The likes of the LA Dodgers and his former team Houston Astros signing him have also been discussed. His next start could very well be in different colors.
Twitter reacts as Justin Verlander picks up 250th career win
Despite how the season has gone for him and the NY Mets, Justin Verlander will go down as one of the greatest pitchers. Now in his 18th season as a major leaguer, Verlander has achieved everything he would have hoped from his career. A three-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series winner, Verlander has amazed over 3,200 strikeouts.
He would receive a standing ovation from the crowd after his milestone moment. Verlander would later express his appreciation from the fans. “The fans tonight were pretty incredible. I would be pretty remiss if I didn’t say thank you to them,” the ace said after the game. Twitter was in a celebratory mood regarding his achievement and here are a few of those reactions.
While he might have struggled this year, this month has been a good one for him. He is 4-1 in his last six starts which has also improved his ERA. Whether he will be here next month remains to be seen. His manager Buck Showalter was happy for him and hoped he could reach the 300-win mark here in New York.
