Justin Verlander

Justin Verlander has turned out the be an asset for the Houston Astros, an asset that does not depreciate with age. The 39-year-old pitcher has recently been in his ace form, becomes just the 19th pitcher SINCE 1901 to have 100+ K, less than a 2.00 ERA, & less than a 0.900 WHIP in the 1st Half of a season.

Justin Verlander becomes the oldest player ever to complete this feat at 39-years-old. Verlander, he missed the entire 2021 season following Tommy John surgery. Now Verlander topped 99 mph on his fastball four times in the seventh inning, an inning in which he threw 32 pitches to preserve a one-run lead. The dugouts were left beyond belief.

“That’s what I remember with the greats doing, like Bob Gibson and Tom Seaver,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. Justin now has a 1.86 ERA; he might be the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award. He’s 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his last five starts.

Justin Verlander is 13-3, became MLB’s first 13-game winner this season by giving out just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in seven innings to lead the Astros to a 3-1 win over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. The performance was breath taking.

Justin Verlander said, “Since my surgery, I’ve been creeping back and feeling better and better, I feel like I haven’t been able to let it go like that in a long time. Really, it feels great. I feel like a younger version of myself. I used to be able to do that. The last few years, I felt like whenever I tried to step on the gas to let it go, the velo didn’t correspond with the effort.”

He added, “So I would always kind of be like, ‘All right, what am I doing?’ I’m not going to try to throw harder and still throw 95, but when it starts creeping up like that on the radar and the crowd gets into it, I get into it, my teammates get into it — it’s fun. Emptied the tank there in the seventh and was able to make some pitches in a big spot.”
