As the MLB Spring training officially kicks off, there seems to be some disturbing news for the New York Mets. Their star pitcher Kodai Senga has suffered a shoulder strain and will likely miss the Spring training period.

The offseason has not been a kind one for the Mets. After missing out some of their high-profile targets from the market, they now have to deal with the absence of Senga in the upcoming days.

According to reports, Senga has a capsule strain on his right shoulder. Mets’ president of baseball operations David Stearns on Thursday further informed that the team does not expect him to be part of the roster on Opening Day.

We don't expect him to be ready for Opening Day, so at this point we would expect him to begin the season on the IL. What I can say at this point comfortably is that we don't expect Opening Day, but I do expect him to make a bunch of starts this year.

While the New York-based franchise does have the option of former New York Yankees’ star Luis Severino, Sean Manaea and right-hander Adrian Houser in the rotation, the absence of Senga will be clearly felt. A timeline on his return is also not set at the moment.

Social media reactions to Kodai Senga’s injury

Injuries are the most unfortunate part of sports. Certainly every player wants to avoid getting injured that too at the start of a new season. Unluckily for the New York Mets and Kodai Senga, this haunting scenario has become a reality for them.

The 31-year-old impressed a lot of fans in his debut season with the team. As the veteran pitching duo of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer failed to make the desired impact, Senga stood up and took the charge.

He would finish the season with a 12-7 record and finish runner-up to Corbin Carroll in the National League Rookie of the Year award. Now he will have to sit on the sidelines and wait for his injury to heal in order to get back on the mound.

Fans on social media have thrown mixed reactions to this. While some sympathized with him, some took shots at the Mets. One fan commented , “Mets already taking L’s“. Check out that and some more reactions on that on X below:

What steps will the Mets take to fill in the absence created from Senga’s injury now remains to be seen. The team also does not have much time on their hands either as they start their Spring training on Saturday when they go up against the St. Louis Cardinals.
