“Kind of blacked out a bit”: Kyle Stowers delighted with his first career HR, orchestrates history

Kyle Stowers orchestrated his magic for the Baltimore Orioles in the 4-3 walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox. His blast was merely the first home run that vaunted White Sox closer Liam Hendriks had conceded on an 0-2 count since 2018.

Two strikes, two outs, down one, an elite All-Star closer pitching in the bottom of the ninth inning, a perfect scenario to be noticed by the elites of Major League Baseball. Kyle Stowers stepped up at this particular opportunity bringing out his team from the depths of disappointment.

A single mind-blowing hit can do wonders for a Rookie’s season, “I’m learning a lot, I’m learning every single day,” Kyle Stowers said. “It’s been really good as far as getting settled in. I always view myself as having room to grow and room to improve.

“I’m just trying to learn as much as I can and just do whatever I can to help the team win. It’s been a lot of fun to be in this clubhouse. The guys have been so supportive, and [I’m] so grateful for how they’ve treated me.”

The first career Homerun also made Kyle Stowers the first Baltimore Orioles player to have his first career homer be a game-tying blast in the ninth inning or later since Rich Coggins in 1973. “I kind of blacked out a little bit,” Stowers said. “I just knew I had another chance, that’s all you can ask for.”

“I think he was floating around the bases,” said manager Brandon Hyde. “He came in the dugout so fired up, and the team was fired up for him and for us. We were so empty offensively for so long in that game, and we finally got a little bit of life there in a timely spot.”

The victory ensured the Baltimore Orioles (65-59) their third straight winning month after going nearly five years without one. They remain 2 1/2 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final American League wild-card spot.

Chicago remained tied with Minnesota for second place in the AL Central, 3½ games behind Cleveland, and is tied for fifth in the three-team wild card derby, needing to vault three teams to reach the postseason that way.
