One thing that makes sports so exciting is the unpredictable nature of it. On a given day, any team can surprise their opponents and fans with a performance of a lifetime. The Los Angeles Angels recorded something like that on Saturday as they hammered the Colorado Rockies 25-1. They set a club record for runs and hits during this huge win.
Coors Field, the home of the Rockies, has always been considered as a batter-friendly stadium. However, this does not take away the achievements of the Angels. The fascinating thing of this all was both Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout did not have much hand in this. While Trout did have a home run, Ohtani went 1-for-7. On his day, Ohtani would have probably chipped in more.
The Angels have time and again been criticized for their over-dependency on Trout and Ohtani. In the game on Saturday, the line-up showed signs that they can probably pull off some wins without their two stars. The Angels recorded 28 hits – the most they have ever in their franchise history. Another interesting stat showed every batter in the starting line-up registered at least one hit.
The entire carnage took off in the third inning as the Angels scored 13 runs in the inning. By this time, the Rockies were only hoping for damage control. The team went with three consecutive homers on three pitches through Mike Trout, Brendon Drury and Matt Thaiss. They followed this mammoth inning with an eight-run inning in the fourth.
In a performance like this, it is difficult to pick out a one-star player. Both Hunter Renfroe and Mickey Moniak recorded five hits each. The consolation prize for the Rockies came in the eighth inning as Brenton Doyle launched a solo home run to prevent an enormous shut-out loss.
LA Angels enjoyed a wonderful day at Coors Field
While those missed the game and checked the score later, they might have wondered probably Ohtani and Trout did something extraordinary. This was the complete opposite case this time. Despite not being at their best for the large parts of the game, the Angels did not require much help from the two baseball superstars.
It turned out to be a recording break night for them. Not only did the team surpass their own record of runs and hits, but this also became the largest margin of victory for them. The last time the Angels had scored 24 runs or more was back in 1979 against the Toronto Blue Jays. Fans on Twitter had a great time in connection with this development and here are a few of the reactions.
The LA Angels will now be looking to build on this win. They are right in contention for the playoffs and will need more such performances in the future to reach the knockout stages. They will take to the field on Sunday, trying to grab the series win.
