On Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Angels decided to take a daring step. The franchise has taken two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani off the trade market. This move was taken in trying to push for playoffs this season. As a result of this, the Japanese sensation will now continue this season at the Angels before hitting free agency in the off-season.
Over the last couple of days and weeks, several reports of trading away Ohtani had shown up. Many experts believed that the Angels would be reluctant to exchange their superstar in the form of some players. Following two days of internal discussion, the Angels according to SI, have hold of buyers for him. They are also making a push and will try to acquire some players to strengthen the team.
The Angels have not been in the playoffs since 2014. Despite having the talents of Ohtani along with Mike Trout, the team has continued to come up short in regular seasons. This time they are 3.5 half games behind the wild card spots. This has given them a realistic chance of making it into the latter stages with their two superstars still on the team.
While this certainly is a big move by the Angels, they now face the likely scenario of losing Ohtani for free. It is widely expected that his next contract will be the biggest in MLB history. It is also believed that the Angels can not afford him. Things could take a drastic turn in the future though.

While this news comes as a setback to potential buyers, it also has some positives. Teams were earlier stated to lose some of their top prospects in an exchange for him that too would have been temporary. The teams will now avoid losing their top prospects and also have a similar chance of signing him. Realistically the likes of the LA Dodgers, the two NY sides, and the Padres are looking to go all in for him.
Following their 9-8 loss against the Astros, the LA Angels have been playing well. After sweeping the NY Yankees, they won their three-game series against the Pirates. This has taken them to 3.5 games behind the third wildcard spot. Twitter was surprised by his shock move and did not stay back from expressing their views on the matter. Check out a few of them below:
To top it off, Ohtani himself is having another stellar season. He has already surpassed his home run tally from last year. The Japanese star is now eyeing to break the AL home run record set by Aaron Judge. His two-way performances have made him one of the greats to ever grace the field. He would be hoping to help his team end the barren run and get a taste of playoff before he heads somewhere else.
