Mike Trout is one of the most renowned MLB players across the world. The Los Angeles Angels superstar has been considered by many as one of the greatest to ever grace the field. Despite not winning any titles with the team, he is considered to be an all-time great. This is because of his skills and abilities and the way he has carried the side over the years. But is his time coming to an end?
Trout signed a mega 12-year deal in 2019 which basically keeps him tied to the club in 2030. The 32-year-old is one of the top earners in MLB and is a well-adorned figure among the Angels fanbase. With seven years left on his contract, Trout will have crossed the age of 39. Whether he will retire with the Angels is now being discussed among fans following a report which suggests that this could be his last season with them.
According to a report from Bob Nightengale, the LA Angels will allow Trout to leave and trade him if he decides to move on. This makes things interesting and hard for the team as they are likely gonna lose two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to free agency next season. With no Trout and plans for a playoff push, it will be tough for them to convince the Japanese star to resign with them.
This development also comes after he recently opened up about this prospect. He mentioned that he would have a conversation with the management in the offseason, see the direction of the plan, and then decide something.
Are the LA Angels in for a double blow and lose both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani?
Before the season even started, the talks had already begun upon the new possible team for Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese sensation is in his final year of contract and will hit free agency in the offseason. However, the recent comments from Mike Trout and the report of him being allowed to leave have shifted the focus on him from Ohtani.
The two players have formed a formidable partnership. Ironically both even faced off each other in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) final as Ohtani stuck out Trout for the final out to win the tournament. For the Angeles, these two have stood like pillars. The question now is are in the LA Angeles in for a double blow and lose both of their stars in the same window?
One of the major reasons why they both would want to leave is the team itself. Apart from them, no player has been able to share the load. MLB legend Alex Rodriguez also previously suggested trading both of them away before the trade deadline and bringing in some players.
If the Angels do lose Mike Trout next season, how would they replace him. His services are something that many teams would hope for but given his previous injury track record, potential suitors might step back from his signature. The answer to where he will play next season can only be answered in the offseason.
