“GET LOST, Your time’s up!” – LA Angels fire Joe Maddon as interim manager Phil Nevin takes over

What an extreme turn of events it has been for Los Angeles Angels and Joe Maddon as the 68-year-old was told to walk out of the esteemed franchise after a mystifying losing streak does not seem to end. It seems like as General Manager, Perry Minasian seems to have got the same idea after he attended his daughter’s second-grade award ceremony. After which he drove to Maddon’s house to deliver this brutally honest update, with interim manager Phil Nevin taking over the preceding.

After a terrific start to the 2022 campaign, the Angels are majorly struggling, courtesy of their 12-game losing streak which enforced Minasian to take stern action by firing veteran coach Maddon for good. Moreover, Phil Nevin, who joined the Los Angeles Angels this very season is being reported to remain in the upcoming role till the end of the season. Mike Gallego would replace Nevin as the Angels’ third-base coach as per the announcement made by Perry Minasian.

“It’s tough,” Angels GM said during a news conference at Angel Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, revealing his raw emotions. “Disappointed it’s come to this. I really like the man. It’s somebody I’m gonna talk to the rest of my life. Just the conversations daily. Who he is, what he’s about. You guys were around him, the energy he brings, how consistent he is on a daily basis. It’s tough. It’s tough. But you gotta be able to take emotion out of things and make decisions. I’ve taken the emotion out of it and taken a step back.”

How ironic does it sound that Joe Maddon’s Angels were 27-17 two weeks ago, and have gone on to register 12 losses, the latest of which came against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. This spoken off losing streak matched their franchise-worst in a single season. It also tied the second longest losing streak since 1900 by a team which was at least 10 games over a .500 win ratio.

To make matters worse, the Los Angeles Angels had a -43 run differential, .596 OPS and 6.31 ERA during the 12-game losing streak.

This was Joe Maddon’s third season with the Angels, an organization with which he has spent a total of four decades as a player and a coach combined. It is indeed safe to say that the magic between Cubs and Maddon never seemed to have clicked with the Angels. To modern-day fans who don’t know, in 2016, Joe Maddon led the Chicago Cubs to their first World Series championship in more than 100 years.
