There is something special about inside-the-park home runs in MLB. It usually involves excellent speed running around the bases or some very poor form of fielding. For the second time this week, baseball fans were given the treat of watching an inside-the-park homer as Tampa Bay Rays’ Luke Raley recorded a unique one against the San Francisco Giants.

Two days ago, Kansas City Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. showcased his incredible speed as he rounded off the bases against the Mariners. Witt Jr. completed circling the bases in a record time of 14.3 seconds. The one recorded on Wednesday turned out to a be rare one as the play bounced off the wall at the Oracle Park.

The Oracle Park, home of the Giants, is famous for lefties hitting splash hits. While the shot from Raley did not go in the McCovey Cave, the home run turned out to be a special one. The ball ricocheted off the wall and danced over the center field fence. This led to confusion among the fielders.

As they continued to chase the ball, Raley never stopped running. In the extraordinary turn of events, the Rays’ hitter would score easily to extend his team’s lead to 6-0. It eventually helped the Rays win the game 6-1.

The sport of baseball is dominated by home runs. Fans are always eager to witness a hitter destroy a ball and send it into the stands. However, on some occasions, the ball never leaves the yard and still, the player records a home run. Well, that’s basically what an inside-the-park home run is. No matter how good regular home runs are, the feel for rounding off the bases while the ball is still in play is something special.

For the Rays, it has been a tough few days. After a stunning start to the season, the Rays have slipped up and are now chasing the Baltimore Orioles. The team then received a major shock this week when reports of Wander Franco being involved with a minor surfaced up. This inside-the-park home run was a welcome distraction for the Rays. Twitter was quick to react to this odd event. One user wrote “how the f*** did it skip like that,” while being surprised. Here are some other reactions to it.

This win helped the Rays take the series as they continue their march for another postseason run. Up next for them is a three-game road series against the LA Angels in Anaheim. As for the Giants, they take on the high-flying Atlanta Braves.
