The way the Atlanta Braves have marched on this year, it feels unreal to think they have broken so many records. The NL East champions clinched their sixth straight divisional title following a triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Much of the credit for this winning run has gone to their offense, led by Matt Olson. He has now broken another franchise record in his team’s 11-5 loss against the Miami Marlins.
Olson recently became the first player this year to cross the 50-home run mark. This meant he was one shy of tying the franchise record for the most home runs by a player in a single season. He has now overtaken Andruw Jones, the previous record holder with 51, to etch his name in Braves history. His 52nd blast of the year seemed to have come up clutch.
This milestone moment came when the Braves were trailing 5-4 in the sixth inning. The slugger launched a towering shot off relief pitcher Steven Okert to level up the game at 5-5. The Braves, though, were unable to hold off the Marlins, who, with a Grand Slam, broke upon the game and ran away victorious.
“I probably wouldn’t have believed you. We’ve had a good run here this year. Obviously, a couple games haven’t gone the way we wanted them here, but sometimes hitting is contagious,” Olson said after the game before thanking and crediting his teammates for their help in achieving this historic feat.
Twitter reacts as Matt Olson achieves historic home run feat
The reason the Atlanta Braves have done so well this year is due to their combined team effort. They have done exceptionally well in both offense and defense this year, which has resulted in them being the best team this year.
In a team full of stars, the name Matt Olson was going under the radar. He has now risen to the ranks and broken into NL MVP award contention.
Whether he could beat his teammate Ronald Acuna Jr. for the award remains to be seen. The Braves won’t certainly mind the duo battling it out, as this could help them achieve even greater feats in the upcoming days. Twitter (now called X) would join in the celebrations with Olson and the Braves. One fan would write, “A historic season,” perhaps referring to both Olson and his side for their performance this year.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
The way the Braves are hitting home runs with their bats, they could break the all-time record for the most home runs in a season set by the Minnesota Twins. The AL Central side slammed 307 home runs in 2019. Meanwhile, the Braves have hit 287 home runs so far. Their main goal, though, is to reach the Fall Classic and hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy at the end of the season.
