The Atlanta Braves are just an unstoppable force of nature this year. The team has just run over every opponent they have faced this season and looks at the hot favorites to win the World Series this year. One of the reasons for this has been their scary offseason who have belted home runs left and right this year. This home charge has been led by Matt Olson, who is now the first player to reach 50 home runs this year.
The Braves slugger started off slowly but soon took over the top spot for home runs from Shohei Ohtani. The injury to the LA Angels man allowed him to overtake him. He accomplished this feat after slamming two home runs in his side’s 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the second game of the doubleheader.
Both of his home runs came against Michael Lorenzen, who recently came into the spotlight for his no-hitter around a month ago. This also marked the first time since 2019 that a National League player had hit 50 home runs. New York Mets’ Pete Alonso was the last player to do this. The “Polar Bear” hit 53 home runs in his rookie year for the Mets.

Twitter reacts as Matt Olson reaches half-century for home runs
The way the season has so far panned out for the Atlanta Braves, there is no hiding that something special is happening. When it comes to breaking or setting new records this season, the Braves have not backed down. Their victory on Sunday saw them become the first team to book their place in the postseason. The games on Monday saw them play a doubleheader with the Braves winning the first and losing the second.
The second game though is grabbing more attention thanks to Matt Olson’s heroics. His first home run came in the third inning. A three-run shot cut down the deficit to one as the Phillies had gathered a 4-0 lead. The second game was in the sixth inning as the Braves once again found themselves down. This solo home run brought the game down to 6-4. Twitter would wildly celebrate this achievement and jump in for the celebrations. Here are some reactions to it.
Before this, his previous personal best was 39 home runs in a year. He is standing closer to another franchise history. Another home run would see him tie the record of legendary Andruw Jones’ club record of 51 home runs set in 2005. With the form he is in, he is likely to surpass that record and establish himself as a Braves legend.
The question now is can he break the record set by Aaron Judge last year? While both play in two different leagues and the NL record is currently held by Barry Bonds, there is no doubt that fans would love to someone match a feat that was set just a year ago. This could also place him in the NL MVP award conversation.
