The Rookies of the Month for August are right-handed pitcher George Kirby of the Mariners and outfielder Michael Harris II of the Braves. Last month, Kirby had a 2.15 ERA and 1.32 FIP in 5 starts, going 4-0. The only start he lost was on August 24, however on that day, he tied a few personal records (seven innings, nine outs), set an AL/NL record by starting the game with 24 straight strikes, and also set a couple personal bests.

The 24-year-old righty finished August with 34 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings and only three walks. He joins Julio Rodriguez, who has gotten this accolade twice, as the second Mariner to receive it in 2022. Since Michael Pineda in 2011, Kirby is the only pitcher for the Mariners to be selected Rookie of the Month.

August was a fantastic month for the Westchester Wizard. In all of MLB, his 1.32 FIP is second only to Justin Verlander (min. 20 IP). Kirby’s main ability, as you might guess, is to restrict walks, and throughout the entire month, he only gave out three free passes. Nobody walked fewer than Corey Kluber. Just 16 of the 120 batters he faced even reached three-ball counts, and of those 16, Kirby was able to strike out six of them. His control reached its peak last week against Washington when he started the game with 24 straight strikes, breaking the previous record established in 1988 when individual pitches began to be monitored and outperforming it by 14%.

Michael Harris II of the Atlanta Braves has been selected the National League Rookie of the Month for August, much to the delight of many fans. Since being called up in May, he had won two major league rookie awards. Michael Harris II has always played like a superstar, but last month he really upped his game. In 27 games, Michael Harris II had a.337/.400/.590 batting line with four home runs, 15 RBIs, and five stolen bases.

In addition, he collected 32 hits, the most among rookies, and he also ran for 22 runs. Harris did so to become the first Braves rookie since Austin Riley in 2019 to have at least 15 RBIs and 22 runs in a single month.

On August 16, Harris committed to an eight-year contract and immediately got to work on making it seem nice. After that, Michael Harris II finished the month with at least one hit in 12 of his 13 games after that. During that stretch, on August 28, the team played the Cardinals and had a four-hit night. Through his first three complete months in the big leagues, Harris has now received recognition as Rookie of the Month twice.
