A year after recording one of their worst seasons recently, the Minnesota Twins seem to be back at their best. Last season, they along with the Chicago White Sox were labeled as favorites to win the division. However, both of them endured difficult times and saw the Cleveland Guardians run away with the division title.
This time the Twins have no mood to repeat that. They are currently leading the AL Central and crushed the Guardians 20-6 to give out a statement win. With the White Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Royals all struggling, the fight for the division crown is between these two. The Minnesota side might have just ended this challenge from the Guardians.
Pitcher Lucas Giolito was making his first appearance for the Guardians. He was waived away by the Los Angeles Angels recently. The Twins would spoil his debut with heavy firing from the start.
The man who stole the spotlight once again was Royce Lewis. The number one draft pick in 2017 has been breathing fire. He would hit his third grand slam in a span of eight days to give the Twins a 6-0 lead early on. In his three innings pitched, Giolito surrendered nine runs and three home runs. What made things interesting was that the team would bring on a position player to pitch later on.
Minnesota Twins extend the lead on top following a huge win
The Cleveland Guardians are one of the youngest teams in MLB this season. Long gone are the days were they would be winning the division and reaching the postseason while appearing under the name of the Cleveland Indians. The name change was met with fury among their supporters. Their fortunes have also not changed since the name change.
With the game beyond their reach at 9-1, the Guardians decided to give their bullpen a rest. However, things got worse from here as position pitcher David Fry was destroyed by a resilient Twins side. They did not slow down as Joey Gallo joined in on the act of stream rolling over their AL Central rivals. Fry would eventually throw four innings and concede seven runs through ten hits, which was better than Giolito.
The Twins are now six games ahead of the Guardians. If they manage to sweep them with victories in the next two games, the AL Central race could be done and dusted. However, if the Guardians can bounce back strong and win the series from here on, things could get interesting going into the final stretch.
