The New York Metsnewest arm, Nate Fisher to come through came from the bank during a season in which they appear to be getting help from everyone. As recently as May 2021, Fisher worked as a commercial lending analyst at Omaha, Nebraska’s First National Bank. He had been unemployed since the Mariners fired him in May 2020, which occurred during the COVID-19 shutdown that resulted in the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season.

He moved away from the game and adapted to his new life, saying that it involved “evaluating loans, a lot of fun stuff,” until the Mariners phoned him again. He was renewed in June 2021. Fisher said after the Mets’ 10-9 victory Sunday at Citizens Bank Park, where he shone in his big league debut, “I didn’t know if the opportunity would arise.” “When it came, I just obviously ran with it. This is my dream — just trying to make the most of it.”

The Mets were interested in the left-hander because of how well he pitched in the Seattle system. He was signed by the Mets in November as an additional depth player who would start the season at Double-A Binghamton. By June, Fisher had been promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, where he pitched 43 1/3 innings with an ERA of 3.12 in starts that lasted between two and five innings. The 26-year-old was called up by the Mets on Sunday morning after a doubleheader in which two other Mets made their club debuts.

The team was frantically searching for bullpen help, particularly from the left side. The banker was money when the time came. As one of the better tales of the Mets season, Fisher pitched three scoreless innings against the Phillies, keeping down one of the best attacks in baseball on both sides of a 46-minute rain delay.
