It seems there is no end to the misery of the New York Mets. The team is seriously struggling this season despite having a star-studded squad full of players. On Saturday against the LA Dodgers, they once again crumbled. Poor fielding and pitching cost them another game as their slump continued.
A few weeks ago they faced off against the Philadelphia Phillies. In that match, they were leading the game and were on course for an important win. However, they imploded later on and gave up runs through fielding and pitching errors. While facing the Dodgers this time, they were trailing the game. Losing is a part of sports and any team can go through a miserable run. It is the way that the Mets are losing that is concerning their fans.
The NY Mets came into this game having lost one of the series by a score of 6-0. This time, they looked competitive and were playing up to their standards. They even turned a huge double play in the top of the eighth inning to keep things close. The NY Mets’ performance in the next two innings somewhat defined their season so far, as they failed again. In the bottom of the eighth inning, they managed to put runners on first and third, but nobody was out. Extraordinarily, they failed to cash on his situation, as the frustration in the stands was clearly felt.
A one-out double from Will Smith put the Dodgers in scoring position. Then came the moment that summed up the season for the Mets. A routine pop-up fly ball was completely misjudged by Brett Baty and he was unable to make the catch, which led to the Dodgers extending their lead. The Mets did not manage to recover from this position and gave up two more runs, losing the game 5-1.
Twitter reacts as NY Mets continue to struggle this season
At this point in the season, the NY Mets must be wondering what is going wrong for them. When they are doing well offensively, their defense goes to sleep, and vice versa. Sometimes both departments fail to show up. They did start the month in good form, but once again slumped to a new low. With every defeat, the pressure on manager Buck Showalter continues to increase.
“It’s not as easy as it may look. It starts out in foul territory and drifts all the way back to where you saw it ended up,” Showalter said about the miscue regarding Baty. The moment significantly proved to be the turning point as the Mets lost all momentum they had. Fans were once again angry and made their voices heard. Here are a few reactions from Twitter regarding this latest chapter in Mets 2023 season.
This is the NY Mets’ fourth straight loss after going on a six-game winning streak. They currently boast a record of 42-50 and are a staggering 19.5 games behind their rivals, the Atlanta Braves. The Mets are likely to become the first big name to drop-out of the post-season race as things look grim for the franchise.
