After failing to get their hands on Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the New York Yankees are exploring different pitching options. As per new reports, the team is considering bringing former All-Star pitcher Marcus Stroman despite his past beef with them.
The 27-time World Series winners had a year to forget last season. Inconsistent performances and injuries to key players saw them finish the season with a disappointing 82-80 record. Since the team is looking to further strengthen their side.
While the addition of Alex Verdugo and Juan Soto gives them balance in offense, their pitching department is where the problem is coming from. Apart from Gerrit Cole, the other pitchers have struggled to assert dominance from the mound.
Apart from Stroman, the Yankees are also looking out for one of their former employees Jordan Montgomery, and 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. However, the cost involved in bringing either one of these two is seemingly too high for the team.
As the Bronx Bombers actively pursue the former Chicago Cubs southpaw, his past history with the Yankees could become a barrier to this deal.
The beef between Marcus Stroman and NY Yankees
As reports of Marcus Stroman heading to the New York Yankees emerge, his past encounter with the side has also surfaced up. Before spending two years in Chicago, the pitcher would represent the Yankees’ city rivals, the New York Mets.
When the Toronto Blue Jays traded him to the Mets, Yankees GM Brian Cashman took a shot at Stroman. He would claim that they did not pursue him back them as he did not seem as a “difference maker“. Cashman further mentioned that he would end up in the bullpen by the time of the postseason.
Stroman was not pleased with the words from him. As the American League continued to run out of fuel in the postseason, the now 32-year-old pitcher would hit back at them.
Besides [Gerrit] Cole, there’s no current yankee pitcher who will be anywhere in my league over the next 5-7 years...Their pitching always folds in the end. That lineup and payroll should be winning World Series’ left and right… yet they’re in a drought! LolMarcus Stroman on New York Yankees as per NY Post.
While such tweets from him have since been deleted, reports do confirm that both parties have a mutual interest in each other.
If there was any time to perhaps bury the hatchet this could be it. The Yankees need one strong pitcher and Stroman needs a franchise at the moment.
The right-handed pitcher finished the 2023 season with a 10-9 record and an ERA of 3.95. He would pick up 119 strikeouts in the 27 games he started for the Cubs.
