“Number of reasons why we didn’t win”: Phillies manager Joe Girardi on being discharged of duties

The former National League manager of the year – Joe Girardi – the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies was relieved of his duties on June 3rd 2022. The decision was a result of the Phillies’ performance this season winning less than half their games.

The Philadelphia Phillies appointed the 57-year-old Manager Joe Girardi in August 2019 to improve their history losing records. The former New York Yankee Manager was set to work upon the playing style of the Phillies but with the record of 22-29 this season, 12 wins behind the New York Mets in National League (East), the Phillies were left with no alternate option. Phillies published, “The Phillies have relieved Joe Girardi of his duties as manager today”, on their official Twitter account.

Joe Girardi reacted to the news during a Sirius XM’s MLB Network Radio segment, straight after. He said, “I think there’s a number of reasons we didn’t win, I think we gave too many extra outs that probably cost us four or five games.”

Joe Girardi also indicated bullpen struggles and slow offensive starts were among several reasons behind Philadelphia’s losing record.

Throughout the time of the interview, Joe Girardi explained “I think you can overcome sometimes one thing, maybe even two, but sometimes when it’s more than that I think it’s somewhat difficult, I can look back on this last week when we were 3-7 and I think realistically we probably should have been 7-3. Well, that’s going to fall on me because we weren’t.”

In spite of his firing, Girardi hoped that his former team clears their path to the playoff and competes in the MLB postseason. “I just pray that they get better and they get to the playoffs,” he told MLB Network Radio.
