“To forgive is divine”- Phillies consider giving second chance to include MLB-banned Pete Rose in Wall of Fame
As long as Pete Rose is prohibited by MLB, he has no place within a million miles of a major league ballpark. In 1989, he consented to a lifelong ban for breaking the game’s cardinal rule- he bet on baseball while he was a player-manager for the Cincinnati Reds.
Pete Rose confessed in 2010 about his gambling saying: “I disrespected the game of baseball,” breaking down in tears. “When you do that, you disrespect your teammates, the game and your family. …“But I’m a lot better guy standing here tonight,” said a distraught player that night.
The Phillies to honour all-time hit leader Pete Rose
The Philadelphia Phillies had planned to induct Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame in August 2017 but cancelled his appearance after a Cincinnati woman testified in federal court that she had a sexual relationship with him when she was 14 or 15 years old. The Phillies are now attempting to honour Rose, baseball’s all-time hit leader with 4,256. They have invited him to a celebration of their 1980 World Series championship team at Citizens Bank Park on August 7.
“In planning the 1980 reunion, we consulted with Pete’s teammates about his inclusion,” the Phillies said in a statement last week. “Everyone wants Pete to be part of the festivities since there would be no trophy in 1980 without him. In addition, the club received permission from the Commissioner’s Office to invite Pete as a member of the championship team.” The Phillies appear to be ignoring the following unfortunate fact: PETE ROSE IS BANNED FROM BASEBALL.
