With the regular season of the MLB entering its final week, teams chasing playoffs are trying to avoid any late mishaps. Unfortunately, the Cincinnati Reds suffered a major blow to their postseason push as they lost a high-scoring game by 13-12 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. This loss will hurt them more as they were leading 9-0 at one stage of the game.

The Reds started the game in commanding fashion as they took an early lead in the game. Three home runs and nine hits off Pirates pitcher Bailey Fatter saw them take an 8-0 lead. TJ Friedl would record an inside-the-park home run to take the hosts in the driving seat. The Cincinnati-based franchise would extend their lead to 9-0 in the third inning. However, very few would have predicted what would happen next.

Baseball is often called an unpredictable game. One swing of the bat could change the game. Alfonso Rivas would open the scoring for the Pirates in the fourth inning with an infield bloop hit. It was not until the sixth inning. Singles from Ji Hwan Bae and Joshua Palacios followed by a three-run home run from Bryan Reynolds made it 9-6.

Rivas came clutch again in the seventh inning with a three-run RBI double to level the game. The momentum had completely shifted in their favor by now. Their bats had started to come together and took a 13-9 lead. Despite the late fightback from the Reds, they were unable to mount their own comeback and lost the game 13-12.

Pittsburgh Pirates script history in stunning victory over Cincinnati Reds

When the Cincinnati Reds took a 9-0 lead, it seemed all over for the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, this season the team has shown a fighting character and is on pace to finish with a better record than last time out. They refused to hold the white flag and surrender and insisted fought back. This victory in the end turned out to be a historic one for the team from Steel City.

This occasion turned out to be the biggest comeback in their franchise history. In their 142 years of existence, before today, the Pirates had never come back from a 9-0 deficit. They had a 0-819 record when trailing by more than nine runs in a game.

This win from them though has put a major dent in the Reds season. They are now 79-77 for the season after this defeat and are 2.5 games behind the final wild-card spots. With only six more games remaining in the season against the Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis Cardinals respectively, the Reds will need to be near perfect to stand a chance of clinching the final berth. The Guardians and the Cardinals have already been eliminated and they will be hoping to take the Reds down with them.
