“Eyed by the reds”- Former Rays utility player Brett Phillips all set to be scouted by Red Sox

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Boston Red Sox appear to be leaving no stone unturned. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Chaim Bloom appears to be kicking the tyres on former Tampa Bay Rays utility player Brett Phillips after trading away Christian Vazquez and acquiring Tommy Pham in two separate deals.

The Rays designated Phillips for assignment yesterday following the acquisition of former Houston Astros outfielder Jose Siri. Phillips was the Rays’ postseason hero during the 2020 World Series, as you may recall.

Brett Phillips is a fun player- Red Sox

Brett Phillips is a fun player to root for, but the outfielder isn’t having a great 2022 season. Phillips was hitting.147/.225/.250 with five home runs and 14 RBIs before being released by the Rays. Those numbers are significantly lower than Phillips’ career slash line, but he remains more of a platoon player than an everyday starter. Phillips has played all three outfield positions this season, but he’s best suited to play centre field.

The former sixth-round pick does have a left-handed bat and good base-running speed. He’s stolen seven bags this season and has yet to be apprehended. Perhaps the Red Sox are looking for a left-handed replacement for Jackie Bradley Jr., who is hitting.210 with a 59 OPS+. At this year’s trade deadline, Boston has been an intriguing team to follow. Perhaps adding Brett Phillips is the latest in a string of unusual transactions that Chaim Bloom is hoping to complete this week.
