“I missed a popup”: Robbie Grossman doomed his 440-game errorless streak
Robbie Grossman
Robbie Grossman miscalculated his first ever catch on Sunday, gave the Chicago White Sox the opportunity to take away the game with a 4-2 victory against the Detroit Tigers. This was the first catch that went through the glove of Robbie in his incredible 440 games. He had going errorless longer than any position player in the history of Major League Baseball.
Robbie Grossman, the Detroit Tigers’ outfielder has been a testament to perfection on defense, but as it is said, ‘Good things come to an end so better things can begin’ and Grossman’s historic streak did pass away at an incredibly important time for Detroit Tigers.
The 32-year-old was seen misjudging a high fly in the eighth inning, appearing to lose it in the sun before it bounced off his glove for the first error charged to him since June 13, 2018. Stats indicate that Robbie Grossman had 821 total chances in between errors. Unbelievable, right?
“I missed a popup and it’s a terrible play on my part,” Grossman explained. “It’s a play I should be able to make and I’ll make it the next time it comes to me.”

Robbie Grossman turned expectation into disappointment after losing his historical streak
While defending the defensive wonder, fans wanted to blame the dropped catch on the sun that glared Robbie Grossman’s eyes. His thought process did not go in the similar direction, he said, “It’s a day game and I’m not going to make excuses”
“[Grossman] just missed it,” Detroit Tiger’s manager A.J. Hinch said. “Obviously, we’re playing deep, no doubles, to try to keep Robert off of second base. So, he had to come a little bit of a long way. Looked like the wind knocked it down a little bit, and then it just looked like he missed it.”

The finale to this match will now be remembered for an unfortunate slip from a player who’s made a habit out of avoiding them longer than anyone in big league history. Indeed.
Robbie Grossman was quick to admit that record was the last thing on his mind afterward: “I didn’t think of it at all,” Grossman said of his now-broken streak. “I’m not going to make any excuses. It’s a play that has to be made, and I’ll make it the next time.”
