Pathetic! It was a pathetic call by the umpires felt Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, who was not a person to keep his emotions at bay. On Sunday afternoon, Minnesota Twins rallied in the ninth inning before a disputed replay review led to an overturned out at home. The controversial call occurred during the 10th inning.

Rocco Baldelli was stunned after Whit Merrifield’s ensuing run for Toronto proved decisive in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to the Blue Jays that led to a tie in the four-game series at Target Field. Merrifield had initially been called out when he hit home plate, but a challenge and closer review showed Twins catcher Gary Sanchez was the one who completely blocked the plate, which was against the rules.

Rocco Baldelli could take the call in; he was furious with the decision. He was ejected thereafter, following the call after an argument with the umpires. Rocco Baldelli’s ejection was the eighth time in his career and the third this season.

Rocco Baldelli said, “In all of baseball, the thousands and thousands of games and plays at home where the catcher actually does block the plate over and over and over again, that play has virtually never been called,”

“And for someone to step in that situation and [decide] someone was blocking the plate, that’s beyond embarrassing for our game,” Rocco Baldelli continued, “for all the players out there on both sides of the field working their ass off for the entire game.”

He just couldn’t accept the violation called out by the umpires, “It’s completely unacceptable. It’s one of the worst moments I think we’ve seen of umpiring in any game I’ve ever been a part of in baseball, and I think it was pathetic.” Added Rocco Baldelli

Even Sanchez could figure out the called as he believed the slid towards him was intentional by Merrifield, “I did move my feet a little, but he had an open lane to slide on the side, and he didn’t,” Sánchez said. “He slid towards me. I’m just tagging him. I had the ball first. I think the line was open for him to slide to the side. He didn’t.”
