It has finally happened. The Washington Nationals defeated the San Franciso Giants 6-1 on Sunday, to complete their first sweep in almost two years. The 2019 World Series winner had failed to register a sweep since 2021. This was the team’s first sweep since taking both games against the Toronto Blue Jays in August 2021.

Recently, the Nationals scripted an unwanted record. Their loss against the San Diego Padres in June meant that had gone over ninety successive series without sweeping their opponents. While it was a great moment for the Nationals, the Giants continued to encounter a skid. This was their fifth consecutive loss with their bats going silent. During this series in the capital, the SF bases side managed to score just five runs.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez was really pleased with the performance from his side. “It was lot of fun. It was a great weekend for us,” he said after the game. The Nationals have now ended a barren streak of 103 consecutive (three-game) series without registering a sweep. Lane Thomas was the star of them on Sunday as he collected three hits, drove in two runs, and stole a team-record four bases in a single game.

The trend of marquee teams struggling to find form continues. The San Francisco Giants are another one of those who are having a hard time. One of the major reasons for their recent struggle has been their offense. The side has managed just to score just eight runs in this five-game losing run. In their latest series sweep, the Giants went hitless on 17 occasions with runners in scoring position.

We know we’re a better offense than we’re showing right now,” manager Gabe Kepler said. He added that “a lot of that has to do with clicking at the same time.” He further highlighted how all good teams with great offense are going through difficult times. Twitter was joyous for the Nationals but brutally trolled the Giants for their poor showing. Here are a few of them.

The Giants will now be hoping to put this behind them as they face the Detroit Tigers to make up the delayed game in April. Following that they visit the Oakland Athletics. Their fanbase will be hoping that the team can come out of this slump quickly as they are right into the mix for a wildcard spot.
