The past few days have seen one man dominate the headlines in the sporting world. Following his historic $700 million move to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani has now broken a record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The MLB sensation has broken the record for the most shirt sales of the two sporting icons.
The names of Ronaldo and Messi are synonymous with football (soccer). The two footballing greats are considered not only the best in their sport but are labeled as the greatest athletes of this generation. So for Ohtani to destroy this record speaks volumes for itself.
As per retail giants Fanatics, the Japanese superstar has broken the sales of shirts within 48 hours of the launch. Previously, Messi had been top of the charts for a while as his iconic “No.10” jersey was in huge demand following his move to Inter Miami. On the other hand, Ronaldo’s explosive return to Manchester United saw the Portuguese lead the sales of “No.7” shirts.
The top five set is completed by NFL star Justin Fields and Ohtani’s baseball companion Bryce Harper. The Chicago Bears QB occupies the fourth spot just ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger.
