“Unlikely to re-sign” Shohei Ohtani willing to be traded, Mets extends hand towards Angels for a trade

Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani trade is definitely highly unlikely to happen within the next week as August 2nd is set as the trade deadline but the New York Mets are appearing to take a full swing with respect to building their team. Mets hold the first place in National League East. MLB insider Jim Bowden jotted down on Tuesday that the New York Mets have approached Los Angeles Angels for a potential blockbuster trade.

The New York Mets had already extended an offer towards Washington Nationals budding-star Juan Soto and now they shifted their focus towards the American League reigning MVP Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels.

Former General Manager Jim Bowden wrote in The Athletic that “by all indications, Ohtani is unlikely” to re-sign with the Los Angeles Angels and he will be available as a free agent after the 2023 season. Although, what seems like a blockbuster trade, is likely to happen in the offseason rather than before August 2nd.

Shohei Ohtani is having another solid season despite the Angels’ struggles, hitting .256/.346/.486 with 20 home runs, 57 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 93 games. He is also 9-5 on the mound with a 2.80 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 134 strikeouts in 93.1 innings across 16 starts.

The rumor of Mets shaking hands with Shohei Ohtani seems possible as New York Mets’ current general manager Billy Eppler served in that role with Los Angeles from 2015-20. In fact, he was the personnel who initiated a trade and signed Ohtani in December of 2017.

Shohei Ohtani has been very clear with his aspirations regarding the World Series title, “In baseball, it’s hard to measure what makes a player No. 1. That’s the hard part, but I think what’s makes a player the happiest is when fans and other people say, ‘He’s No. 1.’ I would like to do my best to become that kind of player.”

Unfortunately, after starting this season with a solid 27-17 record, the Angels are 13-39 in their past 52 games. Don’t think that is how the Angels will take Shohei Ohtani to the World Series contention. They currently find themselves 23.5 games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West.
