Recently the name of the renowned media network ESPN has been trending. However, it is not the way they would have hoped for as the company has laid off several names in the past few days. One name that might follow this trend is Stephen A. Smith. The popular announcer did hint that he might be the next in line. Following his recent comments against the Los Angeles Angels, the Anaheim side fanbase would likely not mind that.
The Los Angeles Angels have been making circles around social media for their employment of Shohei Ohtani. The two-way star has become one of the best players in MLB. His contract with the Angels will end after the season and he will hit free agency. Various speculations regarding how the Angels will plan for the future with Ohtani have surfaced up.
Smith has become someone who is known for his hot takes. While discussing the future of Angels at the First Take segment, Smith went off at the LA Angels. The side announced on Tuesday that Mike Trout will be out for a few weeks whereas Anthony Rendon has joined him on the injured list. This led to the question of whether this was the perfect time to trade Ohtani.
While speaking and wishing a speedy recovery to Rendon, Smith’s next words probably were not well received by the fanbase. “The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, no one cares about you.” He mentioned how he has been in Los Angeles quite a few times and has not heard anyone speak about the Angels. “No one cares. You’re irrelevant, period,” he added.

Twitter trolls Stephen A. Smith following verbal attack at LA Angels

While the LA Angels might not be the strongest teams, they can still pack a heavy punch. They find themselves right in the mix of a postseason run. However, injuries to key players like Trout and Ohtani could prove to be a major reason for their failure. Ohtani exited the game against the Padres with a blister. Any update regarding his injury is unknown, however, he is unlikely to pitch at the All-Star Game.
This is not the first instance where Smith has taken a harsh shot at a sports team. These comments though regarding the Angels have not gone down well within the Angels and MLB community. Twitter has brutally trolled him for this take. Here are some reactions from the fans regarding the Smith incident.
While the future of Smith at ESPN could be at stake, the same could be said about Ohtani. The big question of where the Japanese star plays his next season is on the minds of everyone. The Angels had earlier denied all reports of trading their superstar in the middle of the season. A good offer from another big team could be too good to refuse though.
