As the MLB offseason continues to roll in full swing, there are some significant developments taking place in the market. One such development has seen the Detroit Tigers sign top prospect Colt Keith to a six-year, $28.6 million contract extension.
This move has surprised many connected to baseball. While Keith is regarded as one of the best young players and is ranked number 25 on the MLB Pipeline, he has never played in the big leagues before.
The deal was made official on Sunday. The new contract of Keith will run through the 2029 season. It though does have club options for the 2030, 2031 and 2032 season. This could see his contract being extended to nine-years on a $82 million deal.
Despite Keith not making any major league appearances before, the team have backed him and expressed their commitment through this contract.
Colt has done everything we’ve asked of him during his young career, improving all facets of his game and asserting himself as one of the sport’s most promising young players. This contract demonstrates our faith in Colt and this organization’s commitment to acquire, develop and retain young talent.Tigers’ president of baseball operation Scott Harris on Colt Keith as per MLB.com.
How did Colt Keith perform in the 2023 season?
The baseball world is still in shock regarding the development of Colt Keith. His new contract has made him in the main talking point of baseball discussions lately. As Keith now prepares for a massive year ahead of him, his performances last season showed off what he is made off.
The rookie batted with an impressive average of .306 last year. He would eventually finish with 38 doubles, 27 home runs and 101 RBIs next to his name during stints between Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie.
His most impressive performance though came for Erie when he hit for the cycle while going 6-for-6 with two home runs in a seven RBI performance in May.
Keith is now hoping to make an instant impact on the team. In a video shared by the Tigers, the young sensation is looking forward to contribute to the team and help them win a world championship.
The Tigers could very and truly use a player with Keith’s abilities. The past few years have not gone well for them as they have struggled to finish with a positive record.
In 2023, the side though did finish second in the American Central with a 78-84 record. However, it was far from enough for the team to reach the postseason. With the legendary Miguel Cabrera no longer part of the team, the burden will be on Keith and others to try and perform better in the upcoming 2024 season.
